125 Cutting-Edge Jobs Closer to Reality in Newton, Miss. Biewer Lumber Breaks Ground on State-of-the-Art Sawmill

Jackson, Miss. – Gov. Phil Bryant and officials from Biewer Lumber broke ground today on the company’s new $85 million sawmill in Newton, Miss. The sawmill will create 125 jobs once operational.

“This is a great day for Newton and the entire East Mississippi region as Biewer Lumber takes the next step toward creating 125 new jobs and significant capital investment in Newton County,” Gov. Bryant said. “I congratulate the Biewer team on this milestone and look forward to visiting the company’s state-of-the-art sawmill, once it is officially open for business.”

The Newton facility, which will officially be known as Biewer Sawmill-Newton LLC, will expand Biewer Lumber’s mill production into the South. The company currently operates four sawmills in the Midwest, as well as three lumber treating/distribution centers.

“We are pleased to be locating our new mill in Mississippi and would like to thank Governor Phil Bryant, Mississippi Development Authority, Mid-Mississippi Development District, Newton County and the City of Newton for their hard work and creativity in helping make this project a reality,” said Biewer Lumber Owner Tim Biewer.

Mississippi Development Authority provided assistance in support of the project for site preparation and rail and road improvements. Newton County and the city of Newton are also providing assistance for the project.

“One hundred twenty-five new careers for the people of East Mississippi are closer to becoming reality with the groundbreaking of Biewer Lumber’s new sawmill in Newton,” said MDA Executive Director Glenn McCullough, Jr. “We congratulate our partners at the Mid-Mississippi Development District, the city of Newton and Newton County on this exciting occasion. Their teamwork with MDA played a key role bringing Biewer Lumber to our state.”

This project was first announced in December 2015. Production at the mill is slated to begin in early 2017.
